At Shakespeare Pest Control, we understand the challenges posed by the presence of the white-tailed antelope squirrel is often confused with the chipmunk due to its similar size and appearance. However, it can be distinguished by a single white stripe running from shoulder to hip on its gray-brown body, and the absence of facial stripes that are characteristic of chipmunks. Its tail, white underneath and often carried arched over its back, adds to its distinctive appearance.

In the desert landscapes of Southern Utah, these squirrels thrive in rocky or gravelly soils, often making their homes beneath shrubs, trees, or rocks. Unlike many ground squirrels, the white-tailed antelope squirrel remains active year-round, adapting to the desert’s extreme conditions without the need for hibernation. It is these burrows that are often under gardens, rocks or plants many homeowners call us with questions on how to eliminate them.

Control Methods

Vegetation Management: Allowing vegetation to grow thick can deter ground squirrels, as they prefer open areas. However, this may attract other wildlife, so it’s essential to balance vegetation management with other control measures.

Soil Cultivation: Regularly tilling the soil can destroy burrows and disrupt the habitat, making the area less attractive to ground squirrels[3].

Fencing: Installing sturdy metal or hardware cloth fencing around gardens or specific areas can prevent ground squirrels from accessing these spaces. The fence should be buried at least six inches underground to prevent burrowing.

Netting and Covers: Use plastic netting and row covers to protect plants from squirrels.

Live Traps: Live trapping is a humane method to capture and remove ground squirrels. It’s essential to use the correct bait and place traps near active burrows (bird seed is ideal). Be sure to release them far from any residential homes.

Rat Traps: Rat traps are our preferred method. They are very effective and easy to use. Be careful if small children are in the area or pets.

Rodenticides: For larger infestations, rodenticides such as zinc phosphide and anticoagulants can be effective. These should be used with caution and placed in bait boxes to avoid harming non-target species.

Burrow Fumigation:  At Shakespeare Pest Control we use the Burrow X that uses Carbon Monoxide to eliminate them.
